When her mother (Laura Dern) drags her to a self-help group for children with cancer, the depressed Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shaileen Woodley) meets 18-year-old Augustus "Gus" Waters (Ansel Elgort), who lost a leg to cancer but survived his childhood.
