Satte Farben vor Schwarz

Swiss drama starring Senta Berger and Bruno Ganz: an older couple want control of their own deaths.

Anita and Fred, both around 70, have had a fulfilled life. They know it's coming to an end – especially since Fred has prostate cancer. Then he begins to act out, hurting his wife in the process. When they try to split up and fail, they decide to stay together forever.

This subtle chamber piece by Swiss director Sophie Heldman is a plea for love and self-determination. The performances by Senta Berger and Bruno Ganz – together on film for the first time – makes this spirited, melancholy but in no way depressing drama a deep and meaningful cinematic experience.
